On A Mission

The Three Graces
11" x 14", Oil on Canvas

You had to look quick! These three gals were some determined walkers, as I was plein air painting at Coney Island. They swept by in a westerly direction and a couple of minuets later returned from whence they came. Mary Beth Thompson Dowlin (background) showes her awe.

Plein Air– Peterloon

Peterloon
12" x 16", Oil on Canvas

Painted on Thursday at the Emery home "Peterloon" in Indian Hill, Ohio. One of the great family estates in the Cincinnati area, Peterloon was built in 1928 to rival the country homes of europe. Currently operated by the Peterloon Foundation the house and grounds are available for events and meetings.

I discovered  personal connection to the home: my grandfather was an electrical contractor to the Emerys, when the home was built. This view is of the west wing and main section of the home from a sunken gravel terrace.

Plein Air– Clifton

329 1/2 Ludlow Avenue
8" x 10", Oil on Canvas Panel

South West Ohio Plein Air group was down in the Clifton neighborhood of Cincinnati last Thursday. A heavy urban vibe in this area that's centered on the streets of Clifton and Ludlow Avenues, it doesn't have a square like some of the city neighborhoods.

I didn't want to just paint anything, so I set up across the street from the alley leading to the hair salon that I've been frequenting for the last 37 years. This piece can be currently be seen at Head First, 329 1/2 Ludlow Avenue.

Plein Air– Coney Island

River Gate

I spent two days plein air painting at the old Coney Island amusement park in the California neighborhood of Cincinnati. The Cincinnati Art Club sponsored the first day as part of the celebrations surrounding the opening of ViewPoint 45, the national open show that they sponsor.

The first day I painted the view from just above the Ohio River, looking toward the River Gate. This is the old drop off point for the Island Queen steamboat, that used to bring thousands of passengers to the park every summer. If you use the link above, you can see the River Gate in the bottom photo.

On the second day, with the SWOPA group, I painted in the old midway, looking toward Moonlight Gardens. An outdoor dance hall in use since 1925. Destination of a lot of those folks who came up on the Island Queen to see the top dance bands, especially in the 30's and 40's.

Plein Air– Morrow

Flat Rock Falls
12" x 16", Oil on Canvas

It was a drizzly morning last Saturday for the Ohio Plein Air paint out in Morrow, Ohio. Most of us went up Todd's Fork to paint this falls from different vantage points. A great location I'd like to return to when there's some sunshine.

Plein Air– Findlay Market

Findlay Market Vendors
12" x 16", Oil on Canvas

Last Thursday in Findlay Market, in Over the Rhine. So much activity and color, even though it was during the week. There are several vendors that set up outside at the East end of the Market under tarp canopies. Their wares a displayed to the inside (?), rather than facing out to the walk.
