Plein Air– Sharon Woods

View of the Haynor House
12" x 16", Oil on Canvas
10/2013

Finished this one yesterday in the fading light with numb fingers and chattering teeth. Since the leaves were still on the trees, they kept the rain and snow off the pallet and canvas. Last SWOPA scheduled paintout of the year.

Plein Air– White Water Shaker Village

Bluestem Thicket
8" x 10", Oil on Canvas Panel
10/2013

Due to a meeting I was not able to get out to paint in the raking morning sunlight at the White Water Shaker Village this Thursday. Instead I painted this amazing stand of big bluestem grass. Towering over 10 feet tall, it blocks the view of the Shaker Office in the Center Family building cluster. One of three structures remaining, the Center Family cluster used to encompass 9. A total of 22 buildings from this Shaker community still stand.

Plein Air– Sawyer Point

Cincinnatus– Sawyer Point
8" x 10", Oil on Canvas Panel
10/2013

I only got drenched while scoping out painting locations last Thursday at Sawyer Point. Started in the pouring rain while sheltering under the arches of the Purple People Bridge, this statue is of the namesake for the Society of Cincinnati (after which the city is named). The famous Roman general refused to govern after leading the country's armies to victory. Thus the bundled axe and staves (symbol of the Consul's authority) and the plow (he went back to his estates).

I spent the first of two Saturdays at Eden Park yesterday participating in the Oil Painters of America 2013 Great Painout Cincinnati. Sponsored by the Cincinnati Art Club, there were 22 artists from Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio that particapated. Some were from as far away as Columbus and Indianapolis. Next week we will finish with a wet paint sale of the newly created canvases.

This was painted to match into the format of RP– Lotus 7 & 8, the pair I've had hanging in the Pendragon Homes Model. #7 is headed to Annapolis, MD for the Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional Show, leaving an unmatched pair. This painting has taken its place.
