Reserves Park Pair

Reserves Park- Lotus 8
36" x 24", Oil on Canvas
7/2013

A companion piece to Reserves Park- Lotus 7, this is the second portrait format I've done in the 36" x 24" size. I'm working in this size to fill a special location at the Pendragon Model Home in Mason, Ohio. We have a artwork swap-out coming up at the end of August. You'll be able to see the paintings together there.

Lotus Flower Study

Reserves Park- Lotus Study
8" x 10", Oil on Canvas Panel

I was having trouble rendering the lotus flower in a larger painting, so I did this 8 x 10 on Monday to work out the problems.

Plein Air- Smale Riverfront Park

Moerlein Lager House
12" x 16", Oil on Canvas
7/2013

The new Moerlein Lager House abuts one end of the Schmidlapp Event Lawn at the new Smale Riverfront Park in Cincinnati. In the 19th Century, Christian Moerlein was one of the biggest breweries in the country. A local entrepreneur has revived the name to brew craft beers and opened this restaurant next to the Red's Great American Ballpark.

After Nancy Ford Cones

Leading the Geese Home
12" x 16", Oil on Canvas
7/2013

The Greater Loveland Historical Society is sponsoring another art show this fall based on the photography of Nancy Ford Cones (1869-1962). A native of Loveland and photographer for Kodak and other early photographic supply companies, Cones used location in and around Loveland, Ohio for many of her early 20th Century photos.

This painting is based on this photo:

From My Pond

Water Iris
11" x 14", Oil on Canvas
7/2013

The iris in my water garden have faded (they're the earliest bloomers) and I can't match the purple. I'll have to try to paint them "en plein air" next year.

Plein Air– Hyde Park Square

Kilgore Fountain 2
12" x 16", Oil on Canvas
7/2013

A hot trip to Hyde Park Square last Thursday produced this view of the Kilgore Fountain. Looking at the fountain kept the view cool, even if I wasn't.

Plein Air– Greenfield Plant Farm

Greenhouse Hydrangea
12" x 16", Oil on Canvas
7/2013

I don't know how I got myself into this one, but I guess it turned out OK. This place had the most different verities of plant of any nursery of visited. With all the plants it was hard to get far enough away from things to paint them. They even stock pine needle straw! I haven't seen that since I lived in Alabama.

SWOPA went to the Greenfiled Plan Farm on Clough Pike, near Turpin High School. This is in Anderson Township, Hamilton County and is part of the Eastern suburbs of Cincinnati. Not that this area didn't get settled early. The plant farm is on a homestead settled in 1835 and just down Clough Pike is a log home built in 1795! This area is as close to the original settlement in the Cincinnati area (Columbia, now part of the Columbia-Tusculum neiborhood), as downtown is.

Plein Air– Loveland

Picnic Grove
9" x 12", Oil on Canvas Panel
6/2013

Thursday, a week ago, SWOPA joined the people who were participating in the Loveland Paint the Town to work "en plein air" in that little burg. I found this little picnic grove in the back of the Loveland Canoe Livery's property. The Little Miami River was just to the right behind the trees and the Little Miami Bike Path it just behind the row of trees to the left.
