Japanese Bridge
14" x 18", Oil on Canvas

This replica of Monet's Japanese bridge is located in the Water Garden at the Cox Arboretum and Gardens MetroPark in Dayton. The pond at the Cox is not full of water lilies as at Giverny, but still has many lovely reflected views.

No Trumpet Flowers?

Fence Row 9
16" x 20", Oil on Canvas

There's more than trumpet vine, grass and poison ivy in those fence rows! This view has some blackberries ripening, but not ready to pick.

Still Life at AAPs

AAPs– Still Life 9
10" x 8", Oil on Canvas Panel
01/2016

Still life painted from set up at Arts Alliance Painter's Monday morning session. This was about an hour and a quarter's work after watching a video by Qiang Huang on still life painting. I tried to follow his value set up to start, but then got into painting in my own style.

The Last Covered Bridge

Jediah Hill Bridge
12" x 24", Oil on Canvas
01/2016

Just north of Mt. Healthy in Springfield Township, Jediah Hill built a water powered saw and grist mill  in the 1820's. The mill burned down in the 1980's, but a covered bridge that Jediah built across the west fork of the Mill Creek still stands. Built in 1850, this is the last covered bridge in Hamilton County, Ohio.

Last Year's Winter

Reserves Park– Winter's Grip 2
6" x 8", Oil on Canvas Panel
01/2016

We were thinking that winter would never get here, of course now we have temperatures hovering in the single digits! I painted this little 6x8 as a companion to "RP– Winter's Grip". Another little 6x8 of the frozen ponds at Wetlands Park in the Reserves parks along the Butler County Regional Highway.

Evening at Glenwood Gardens

Evening– Lengthening Shadows
16" x 20", Oil on Canvas
12/2015

A studio piece worked up from some photos taken at the end of an afternoon plein air painting session at Glenwood Gardens Park. The sun was casting increasingly long shadows as I finished up and the high overlook above the valley floor was the perfect vantage point. Fall color adds just the touch to increase the warmth of the setting sun.

Plein Air– Sharon Woods

Fall Color
12" x 16", Oil on Canvas
10/2015

Our last outing for South West Ohio Plein Air this year was to Sharon Woods Park. We made in just before all the fall color departed. The leaf display was short lived, probably due to dry weather in August and September. Most of the trees that have yellow leaves just turned brown and fell off. This was the most colorful location I found in the park.
